The Tradition

It continues. I've decided to finish what I started a year ago and post about my culinary classes. They were so much fun-I have to. Plus, I have some killer photos to share.

Let's see I think I left off...? Oh yeah, the last class was individual and production pastries. So that means the next one is cookies, tarts, and mignardise ("meen-yar-dee"), which, as an adjective in French, is used to describe something graceful and delicate. As a dessert, it is something small, usually a bite or two, and is traditionally served after dessert, or with coffee. Sort of as a way for the chef to say thank you. I quite enjoyed this class. I'm a fan of small bite desserts, and we were able to make some cool ones. This is the class where I learned to make french macaroons. And believe me, I messed up royally the first time I made them. The method for making these is something that takes time to get right. I still get nervous every time I make them because you won't know if they're messed up until they are baked. It's not like you can just start over. I've thrown away a lot of messed up macaroons! This was also the first time we learned how to temper chocolate. It's not the easiest thing, as chocolate is very delicate and temperamental. I really liked it though, and aside from it taking forever the first time, we made some really scrumptious truffles. mmmmm... We also practiced a lot of piping techniques with a small pipette. It's a small parchment cone with a really finely cut tip, so you get those really fine lines. It's not easy, because every little movement gets noticed. We were able to do petit fours and pipe the designs on them.

Merry Holidays

Every year as Christmas is approaching I realize that I have a massive list full of people that need presents. My family isn't exactly small, plus, when you're married, you have another family to buy things for. Not that I mind, I just have a lot of extra thinking to do. My usual routine involves the thought process beginning in October, then escalating to the point that mid-December rolls around and I still haven't done anything. When half the recipients are scattered across the continental US that means a mild freak out occurs because I could miss the cut off date for mailing. Which happened this year. heh. BUT! I had great intentions, and I almost made it. I guess mailing packages out at 5:30pm on Christmas Eve at the automated machine at the post office still counts as before Christmas. Right?...right? I decided to make fancy goodies to put in decorated boxes. I chose Irish cream chocolates and marionberry French macaroons. I get really excited about making chocolates and French macaroons. They are so versatile and FUN. You wanna see?

Part Deux

I was greeted two nights ago with packages aplenty on my doorstep. I love getting packages. It's like opening presents. Anyway here is what the Amazon gods sent me:

A really great strap for my yoga mat. It's a three in one thing so it can not only hold it together, but can be used for stretching and resistance training. It's awesome.

A Detox book. I find it only fitting being that the new year is here. Seriously you guys, if you haven't detoxed in some form or another in the past, try it out. You'll never feel better. It's amazing what making a few small changes to your lifestyle can do. And this book was only 3 cents or something ridiculous...seriously, it was.

And...the best part. A freaking ice cream maker. I've been daydreaming about one of these all year. I have so many fun ideas for ice cream. oh my gosh...

Holy jeez it looks like an iPad

I'm a lucky girl. I got a super duper package in the mail today. My momma gave me a really cool thing called a gift card for my birthday. And I spent it on Amazon. I have a little bit of an obsession with Amazon. I think it's the Wish List? Yeah. I've been building that thing for the past 4 years at least. It's just sad because I don't think I've ever bought anything off of it. You'd think that with the Super Saver Shipping I'd be all over it, but... until now! Yay for ME. Three of the things I bought came today after waiting excruciatingly long. Like 5 days. So today I got:

A kitchen scale that looks like the space age. Imperative in the kitchen. At least for me. LOVE IT.

A cast iron, double sided, flip thing. Mr Grill-Mr Griddle.

And last for today, the best cover up ever made, Max Factor. Especially now that it's not being sold anymore in the US. Boo.

And more is coming...
